These skills develop throughout childhood and adolescence, with the prefrontal cortex — the brain region that houses most executive functions — maturing well into the mid-twenties. For neurotypical teens, this development is gradual and mostly invisible. For teens with ADHD, the trajectory is different: the same skills develop, but on a delayed timeline and with different support needs.

Research by Dr. Russell Barkley and others has shown that executive function deficits are central to ADHD, not a side effect. How the ADHD brain develops these skills differently

The ADHD brain is not broken. It is different — and that difference has real implications for how executive functioning skills develop.

Three key neurological differences shape the ADHD experience of executive function:

  • Delayed prefrontal maturation: The frontal lobe, home to most executive functions, matures 2–3 years later in ADHD. A 16-year-old with ADHD may have the executive function capacity of a 13-year-old — and that's completely normal for their brain.
  • Dopamine dysregulation: Dopamine is the neurotransmitter of motivation, reward, and persistence. ADHD brains have less efficient dopamine transport, which means ordinary tasks feel less rewarding and motivation depends more heavily on interest, novelty, urgency, and competition.
  • Poorer signal-to-noise ratio: The brain's filtering system is less effective, so distractions penetrate more easily and working memory gets overloaded faster. This makes multi-step tasks and busy environments especially challenging.

These differences don't mean ADHD teens can't develop executive functioning skills. They mean the skills need to be taught differently, practiced more deliberately, and supported with external structures.
